Local History Societies / Museums

Local History 01

Throughout Ireland there is a thriving local history and heritage scene – with each local group offering a host of activities ranging from lecture nights, field trips and publishing opportunities.   This page is a simple list of those societies with a web page or a web directory entry with contact details.

If you know of any others, please let me know about them and I will include them on this list.

This list is in a constant “work in progress” condition, therefore if you know of any updated links, additional information or anything you might consider useful for the local historian, please do let me know.

I am starting with Dublin and surrounding counties but hope to include listings from all 32 counties in the near future.

These societies and groups do a huge amount of work to research, record and preserve local history, lore, culture and heritage.  If you have an interest in local history, why not contact your local society and go along to one of their monthly meetings?

    Limerick Local History Groups:
    Thomond Archaeological Society http://thomsoc.blogspot.ie/
Knocklong History and Heritage Society https://sites.google.com/site/knocklongtest/
    Mungret Historical Society http://www.mcrparish.com/parish-groups/organisations/mungret-heritage-society/

A lot of the Limerick groups still run by old fashioned snail mail and phone calls. These include:
    Adare Historical Society
    Castleconnell Historical Society
    Limerick Historical Society

There are places that have historical regular talks but aren’t societies such as
    Limerick City Library
    Limerick Society of Friends

My site Limerick’s Life http://limerickslife.com/ is a local history site

Great to see a list of these groups being put together, I hope the above helps.

And many thanks for giving me the impetus to complete the Limerick section.
I have updated my list (with your additions) and published it.
Hopefully, this will send along a few new visitors to their meetings, talks and excusrions.
      Best regards
      James
